Really pleased to revisit this client's new garden

Really pleased to revisit this client's new garden in its second year. The design is inspired by an enchanted forest, incorporating conifers, multistem trees and roses into an informal perennial planting scheme. Still a few gaps after last year's brutal summer, but it was great to see how well almost everything has grown. Hard to convey the scale of the garden in photos, once the surrounding beech hedge has grown up, it really will feel enchanted.

Great to revisit this client's new garden, already starting to look good after planting in April. Definitely a better year for new planting after last year's horrendous heat and drought. When the garden matures, the fence will be covered in roses, clematis, jasmine officinale and trachelospermum jasminoides. Feature trees are multistem Prunus serrula and a fastigiate Liquidambar. Greens, purples and fluffiness create a long season warm welcome in these beds either side of the front door in this client's garden. A simple planting scheme of Stipa tenuissima, agastache Blue Fortune, Allium sphaerocephalon, Verbena officinalis Bampton, plus Pittosporum Golf Ball for evergreen structure. I also used Trachelospermum jasminoides on the wall for some vertical evergreen structure and, of course, the marvellous scent.

Fantastic tour of @eastrustonoldvicarage gardens today with the inimitable Alan Gray. It was fascinating to hear about the evolution of the gardens from literally nothing but a bare field. There are so many different styles of garden and gorgeous corners within East Ruston's 32 acres, one visit can't do them all justice. On this occasion my favourites were the Exotic Garden with its two pools and beautiful water fountain, and the Desert Wash, which is designed to resemble parts of Arizona where drought is punctuated by very heavy rainfall and flooding once or twice a year. Having recently been to Sissinghurst, I was reminded of the Delos garden, of course very different as it is modelled on the flora and landscape of a Greek island, but both of these dry gardens have elements which are very relevant to garden design for a changing climate, especially in East Anglia where average annual rainfall is already low.

Fantastic visit to @Holkham Hall Walled Garden. I last visited in the early 2000s when it had been leased out for many years and was heart breakingly dilapidated. I used to imagine how it must have been when it was a working garden, busy with gardeners and packed with thriving plants. So exciting to see how much has been restored of this absolutely vast space, including what were state of the art heated glasshouses and growing pits built in the 18th and 19th centuries. There were even flues within some of the massive garden walls so that they could be heated to protect the blossom of the espaliered fruit trees from frost. Now each restored section of the garden is planted on a different theme, there is also a vineyard and cutting garden. Still more to do but what a fabulous transformation.

The superglam divas of the garden, lilies don't do well on my Norfolk clay. After a few experiments, I seem to have found the perfect spot for these Martagon lilies in a sheltered raised bed where the soil is well drained. Definitely worth the effort, even if they invariably end their short glamorous show infested with lily beetles.

Roses and Peonies, the quintessential cottage garden flowers. This is a garden I designed a few years ago. The roses on the arch are Goldfinch (probably a little too vigorous for the arch but absolutely gorgeous) and Sombreuil, for me the best old climbing rose of all. The peony is the stalwart Bowl of Beauty.

The incomparable Rose Garden at Sissinghurst. The sense of connection to the past is so powerful and the embodiment of the much overused phrase 'a sense of place'. It was a privilege to tour the gardens with @troyscottsmith1 and hear about the team's commitment to keeping the gardens as close as possible to Vita and Harold's original vision. Fortunately this is well documented in notebooks, sketches and letters, and it was very interesting to hear how these sources are actively used and referred to as part of the management of the gardens. Not least, of course, in the marvellous recreation of Vita and Harold's Delos garden (see previous post).
