Courtyard Planting Design for a Suffolk Barn Conversion

The brief for this courtyard was a bold, pollinator friendly planting scheme for the owners to enjoy while sitting in the courtyard, and also when viewed from the upper windows of the barn. The scheme uses perennials suited to the hot dry conditions in the central bed, as well as a more formal scheme with grasses and clipped pittosporum against the black barn wall. The old brick walls provide a perfect setting for espaliered fruit trees, complemented by low level planting which spills over the reclaimed paving.

“We absolutely love the courtyard and I do think it is the best thing that has happened to the garden and possibly the house. It has looked good all through the winter with textures and seed heads and now , well it is just gorgeous!”
